Like is a preposition when used to make a comparison, and it is properly followed by an object but no verb: “He uses the ATM like a piggy bank.” Like is often misused in sentences that call for a conjunction. When the clause that follows it contains a verb, use the conjunction as, not the preposition like: “She acted as if she had seen a ghost.”
